Departmental filestore

(Also known as H-drive)

Everyone has 20GB of storage available to them personally.

It can be accessed by going to:

\\staffstore.dcs.shef.ac.uk\username (On Windows)
smb://staffstore.dcs.shef.ac.uk/username'' (On Linux or Mac)

(Change 'username' for your user name!)

On Windows, when you enter your username enter it as COMSCIAD\username
On Linux/Mac: Enter username on its own; when it asks for the domain, put COMSCIAD.

For Linux users, it can also be mounted using SSHFS. See Access to home dir with sshfs

Checking your quota usage

Everyone by default has 20GB quota on Staffstore. This is the “soft” limit, and you'll be able to use up to 30GB, but only for 7 days. At this point, you will find you can't write any files and may wonder why.

To check your current usage, you do it differently depending on your computer type:

For Windows, open “This PC” from the start menu, find the network drive for “Staffstore” (often mapped as H-drive), right clik on that and go to Properties. You'll see a donut chart showing how much space you've used.

On Linux, you can either: SSH to staffstore.dcs.shef.ac.uk and run the command “quota -s”, or: In the File Manager, the staffstore share will be listed in the left pane of the window; right click on this and select Properties.

If you are over quota
The easiest option is to delete some files if you can, to bring your quota usage below the soft limit.
If your quota is less than 50GB, you can request more space. Put in a TopDesk ticket to request it.
If you require more than 50GB, some separate storage should be requested, again via TopDesk, and we can discuss your options.
Research data is best stored on University (ITS) filestore. 10TB can be allocated free of charge. For information about this service, please see https://students.sheffield.ac.uk/it-services/research/storage

Backups and restores

The Staffstore filestore is snapshotted every night so you can access the files as they were the previous day (useful if you accidentally deleted something and want to retrieve yesterday's version); this can be accessed by yourself in the file manager by going to

\\staffstore.dcs.shef.ac.uk\backups (Windows), or
smb://staffstore.dcs.shef.ac.uk/backups'' (On Linux or Mac)

There is also 30-day store of daily backups which can be retrieved but this requires systems administrator action so a TopDesk ticket must be created. When creating a request please state which day you require from and which files/folders. This will then be manually restored by a techie person into a folder “Restored” in the root of your filestore.
